Reaching Out

Arguably the most famous verses in the Bible are John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

If you read the Bible’s account of Jesus’ life (the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John), you will find that Jesus Christ primarily spent his time in two ways: (1) teaching people and (2) helping the physically needy.

The message Jesus taught is called the Gospel, which simply means ‘Good News.’  The Greek for good news is ‘eu-angelion.’  The English word ‘evangelism’ therefore simply means to share the Good News of Jesus with other people.

The Good News has also inspired followers of Jesus for the last two thousand years to care for the physically needy in various ways, including founding hospitals and schools, campaigning against slavery, and providing disaster relief and urban regeneration.

Sometimes Christians have felt called to share the Good News and help the needy beyond the borders of their own community and have been sent to do so with the blessing and backing of the Christians at home.  The English word for this is ‘mission,’ which comes from Latin for ‘to send.’

Jersey Baptist Church seeks follow Jesus’ example by reaching out to the community in Jersey and to the rest of the world in practical ways and through teaching, evangelism and mission.  Our out reach activities are essentially co-ordinated by four Action Groups:

  • Care and Visitation Action Group co-ordinates the work of looking after the sick and needy - Email CAVAG

This includes hospital visits and preparing meals for people at home.
